Summary:
PVD superhard coatings are well known for their high hardness and excellent wear resistance. These coatings are typically deposited on cutting tools and wear-resistant components, with thicknesses ranging from 0.5 to 6 µm.
To control the internal stress of this film layer, the coating predominantly employs a nanolayered structure, thereby mitigating the tendency for delamination that often arises in thicker single-layer films.
At the request of a customer, PVT began developing an industrial-scale coating process for depositing a 20-micrometer-thick single layer of titanium nitride. After six months of development, a PVT S2 ultra-hard coating system was successfully manufactured, fully meeting all of the customer’s requirements—thanks in large part to PDA* technology.
The 20‑micron‑thick TiN coating deposited by this system exhibits exceptionally strong adhesion, with outstanding repeatability and a tolerance of only ±0.2 microns (±1% of the total coating thickness). Furthermore, thanks to a newly designed, custom‑made rotary chuck, the time required to deposit a 20‑micron‑thick film has been reduced from 10.5 hours to just 3 hours.
