Summary:
Arc evaporation is widely used to deposit ultra-hard, wear-resistant, and corrosion‑resistant coatings on cutting tools, dies, and components.
Depending on the size and other parameters of the arc evaporation source, the target material—such as Ti, AlTi, Cr, and various other materials—is typically evaporated in a constant DC mode (between 60 A and 200 A).
In conventional arc deposition, the arc is confined by a magnetic field to control its motion on the target material, thereby preventing uneven coating distribution within the vacuum chamber caused by the arc’s tendency to drift.
Over the past two and a half years of development, PVT has pioneered an arc‑based technology that combines HiParc* (High‑Energy Pulsed Arc) with PDA** (Plasma Diffusion Arc). The arc operates at extremely high energy levels, driven by pulsed current at specified frequencies and durations.
The most important advantages of HiParc* technology:
- Significantly shortened the cycle time.
- Greatly improves the utilization rate of the target material.
- The deposited film layer is smoother.
PVT can reduce the time required to deposit state-of-the-art, high-performance coatings by more than 50%, and by leveraging HiParc* technology, it can increase customers’ coating‑equipment utilization by 85%.
Meanwhile, by combining the HiParc* and PDA** technologies, target utilization can reach up to 70%, depending on the composition of the target material.
Meanwhile, PVT has commercialized its HiParc* technology and has successfully delivered several coating systems based on this technology—some for customers to perform in-house coating of their own products, and others to provide coating services to their clients.
